Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral which, until 1999 when it was banned, was used extensively in the construction of buildings and the production of materials. When it is disturbed, it can release deadly fibres which, if inhaled, can cause lung diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. It is therefore vital that any potential asbestos-containing material is identified, managed and controlled appropriately to prevent its disturbance.URL :staysafeenvironmental.com
For buildings that were constructed prior to 1999, and are still in use, a management asbestos survey will be required. The purpose of this is to ensure that the building is fit for occupation and that any asbestos present is being safely managed.

Any renovation or repair work that requires the disturbance of ACMs must be cleared by the asbestos coordinator. This includes removing, sanding, cutting, drilling, and hammering on flooring, walls, fire doors, or ceiling materials. The coordinator will determine if the project can be completed without disturbing ACMs, or if a licensed asbestos abatement contractor must perform the work. The coordinator will notify the asbestos abatement contractor of any areas where ACMs are likely to be disturbed and will request that they provide an SSACP and air clearance results.
If a project is determined to require disturbing ACMs, the project leader must complete O&M-level 16-hour training. O&M level-trained employees are authorized to perform projects where ACMs are disturbed in amounts no greater than 3 LF or 3 SF and the amount of ACM removed will not exceed one standard asbestos waste bag. All employees who disturb ACMs or trace ACMs must also be trained and receive an annual refresher course. The ACMs must be properly contained, labeled, documented, and transported for disposal.
